Staff Meeting 11/3/19

  • 80th Anniversary Events- As the 2019 approaches, we are wrapping up our years long celebration of lectures and community events honoring our landmark anniversary.   Thanks to everyone who has attended, helped to produce or promote these events.
    • Oldies show
      • With a sold out house, last night’s Oldies show at the Stillwood Inn was our most successful fundraising event yet (and perhaps ever)! The show sold out a week in advance and the house was packed, with over 350 patrons who enjoyed an awesome buffet dinner and dancing that went on until 11pm.
      • Jimmy Z and his staff put on one heck of an event and we should all be grateful for their support and efforts.   While we won’t have a tally of the revenue until tomorrow, I estimate that the station will net between $3,000 – $5,000 from this one event!
      • I also want to thank our staff members who participated in the event. It was great to see all of you out on the town! Special thanks to Chaim and Helen for volunteering to sell merchandise

4 events remain for this semester:

  • Banning Eyre Tonight, at 6:30
    • we have invited a special guest with over 3 decades of amazing international radio under his belt. Banning Eyre is a WES Alumnus and award winning producer of the Peabody award winning Radio program, Afropop Worldwide. We are very fortunate for this intimate opportunity to hear first-hand from Banning about his experiences and examples of his field work!
  • Sunday Nov 17 Fall Record fair
    • Lots of volunteer opportunity that day!
    • Please help continue to promote!
  • Dec 4 – J Kehaulani Kauanui Lecture Allbritton 3rd floor @ 4:30
    • Another amazing opportunity to learn from another person who has used radio bring marginalized voices to the airwaves. While on air JKK’s radio show, “Indigenous Politics” was syndicated and heard on many reservations across the country. Recently select interviews from the program were transcribed and published!  Please join us and help spread the word about this great event!
  • Final Commemorative event / WESU 80th Birthday party
    • While we’ve run into a bit of a snafu lining up our preferred venue for the date, we are working to put together a fun and exciting event to wrap up a year of celebrations.
    • Like tonight’s meeting, where we are incorporating the 80th into our time together, we plan to dedicate our December staff meeting to recognize and wrap up this special anniversary.
    • The program will include a variety of performers and dignitaries from on and off campus.  Short performances of music, poetry, hypnosis, will be interspersed with dignitaries celebrating the station and our legacy of community service.  It would also be nice to use this as an opportunity to have a food drive for Amazing Grace Food Pantry.
    • Problem:
      • Due to Wesleyan’s Thanksgiving break, our December staff meeting cannot be held on Dec 1 (first Sunday). When this occurs we usually reschedule for the following Sunday. In this case, Dec 8.  Unfortunately, Our Preferred Venue Beckham Hall, (home of the record fair) is not available on Dec 8.
      • Beckham Hall is available on Saturday Dec 7th.
      • We have been working to identify another venue for Sunday the 8th but options are limited for the event we want to produce.
      • One Fear switching to Saturday would have a bad effect on our staff attendance or this event.
      • Who would not be able to attend an event on Dec 7th?
        • About 9 people raise their hands…
      • From this, it seems like we’re going to need to keep the event on Dec 8th, in the DFC…
  • Other board updates?
    • Program – Will be in touch about Thanksgiving break coverage process (dates?)
    • PR – looking into starting an Instagram campaign to amp up our digital presence on social media, which will include profiles about WESU DJs/shows. Keep an eye out for upcoming emails about this!
    • Tech – please don’t change the settings on the equipment or software!!!
    • Training – Last week of training! Now internships and service hours will begin! About 40 trainees
    • Community Liaison – got so many people who wanted to spin vinyl at record fair, that we restructured it to fit 8 DJs. We’re going to put it up on social media so everyone knows who will be spinning when
  • Fall Pledge Drive
    • Goal is $25,000
    • Get mailing this week or next
      • Great opportunity for fulfill some service hours!!
    • Need new 80th anniversary themed promos to play during live shows and automated programs
    •  Each DJ should develop a personal goal, to help us reach out larger goal.
    • Make a reasonable goal, stick to it, and keep your stakeholders updated!
    • Figure out who is most likely to support your show, you listeners? Your friends, co-workers?
    • Remember, “There is no community radio without listener support”
    • WESU depends you to help make sure the communities we serve understand this and help out.
