Our Favorite Songs (81 – 85)

81. Red Door by Julien Baker

Year Released: 2019
Released On: Red Door / Conversation Piece
Nominated by dj midiwife of t.s. elliott smith who says: Carrie Brownstein writes in “Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl” that “Everyone who plays music needs to have a moment that ignites and inspires them, calls them into the world of sound and urges them to make it.” For me, that moment was hearing Julien Baker’s album Sprained Ankle back in 2015. The song “Red Door” wasn’t officially released until 2019, but there are live versions on YouTube dating back to 2016. Besides being my favorite Julien Baker release, the song has nostalgic meaning for me: it was the first “riff” I ever taught myself on guitar.

82. Last Call by Elliott Smith

Year Released: 1994
Released On: Roman Candle
Nominated by Gem from Cambridge who says: I listened to this song on repeat often during quarantine. I reads like a poem to me.

83. Shed A Little Light by James Taylor

Year Released: 1991
Released On: James Taylor Live
Nominated by Cath from Buffalo who says: I was seated in the front row at a James Taylor concert in 2006 and when he sang this song (which had long been a favorite of mine), something truly magical happened for me.

84. Knights of Cydonia by Muse

Year Released: 2006

85. Attitude by Bad Brains
