Our Favorite Songs (451 – 460)

451. When the Music’s Over by The Doors

Year Released: 1967
Released On: Strange Days
Nominated by Chris the (great) Aunt who says: The Doors music my rebellious music in my teens.

452. The Leaving of Liverpool by Storm Weather Shanty Choir

Year Released: 2002
Released On: Off To Sea Once More
Nominated by Sir Jon of Pint O’ Comics who says: This age-old folk tune has been recorded for generations by bands on multiple continents. Typically viewed as an Irish folk tune, it’s often played as a sea shanty, as in this recording by this Norwegian group. This track from their 2002 live recording is upbeat and sad at the same time and has caused me to store multiple versions of the song in my playlist. This one is the best.

453. Man with the Child in his Eyes by Kate Bush

Year Released: 1978
Released On: The Kick Inside
Nominated by Charlie from Petaluma who says: Made me a Kate fan for life…one of the most imaginative artists ever

454. Gazzillion Ear by MF DOOM

Year Released: 2009
Released On: Born Like This
Nominated by Asher from Middletown who says: Very hard to pick a favorite DOOM song. However, there is no combination that works better for me than DOOM verses and J Dilla production. No disrespect to what Madlib’s done, but Dilla will always be in a league of his own. This song is the purest form of this legendary duo. Both rapper and producer are at the top of their game here, finding perfect pockets in their flow and switching seamlessly between amazing beats. A display of these legends’ mastery. RIP DOOM & DILLA.

455. I’m Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman by The White Stripes

Year Released: 2001
Released On: White Blood Cells
Nominated by DJ Corvus of One Song who says: A really great, simple rock song

456. Age of Consent by New Order

Year Released: 1983
Released On: Power Corruption and Lies
Nominated by DJ AmorOso of WTF: What the Funk, Storytime who says: Someone once told me this song has the same energy as me, and I take that as a very big compliment.

457. I’m The Ocean by Neil Young

Year Released: 1995
Released On: Mirror Ball
Nominated by DJ Cheshire Cat of Wonderland who says: The entire Mirror Ball album is a treat for me, with Neil Young and Pearl Jam’s collaboration yielding something more rewarding than stone-cold album classics – songs that are clearly the result of musicians having a blast. Capturing the loose, driving grooves that defined the best Crazy Horse recordings, “I’m the Ocean” lets the players play on while Young muses and turns from strange scene to strange scene. Listening to it again as I’m writing this, I’m also blown away by the casually tossed off piano accents from Brendan O’Brien that presage the stylistic tendencies of groups like The Hold Steady.

458. Blue Moon by Chords

Year Released: 1960
Released On: Atlantic
Nominated by Joel from Queens who says: Very rare cover of the original by the Marcels.

459. Cathy’s Clown by The Everly Brothers

Year Released: 1960
Released On: Warner Brothers
Nominated by Larry of Moondog Matinee who says: Their best and inspirational group for The Beatles.

460. Brother Sport by Animal Collective

Year Released: 2009
Released On: Merriweather Post Pavilion
Nominated by Felix from Sollentuna (Sweden) who says: Fans are tired of saying that this is their favourite. An ecstatic heartfelt, rhythmic song
