Board Notes 2/11/19

Beth/President:

  • Are board hours good for everyone?
    • Jake’s are now on friday
  • Board meetings – every other week?
  • Event regarding Wesleyan’s music scene (lack thereof) this friday
    • should WESU be represented here?
  • Concrete plans & approaches to 80th:
    • “80th” tag for Soundcloud files and facebook events…links things together/builds awareness
  • Pete Ganbarg visiting WESU student forum this Friday at 2pm in Boger (41 wyllys) 116 – open to staff!
    • Should we have a list of student DJs to email for events like this? Separate email lists for case-by-case basises?

Babe/VP:

  • A music prof. is planning a class on radio history/production and is hoping to get students to create short (5min) radio segments
    • Wild wild live time allotted for this, but if anyone is interested in supervising some of the recorded segments let me know!
      • Also maybe a staffwide email?
    • Might be broadcast in an open timeslot over spring break

Meg/Program:

  • Program guide is finished and will be printed soon. (BM has sent files to the printer)
  • Should we put out a StreamRewind reminder for new DJs now that the program is in full swing? I’ve gotten a few emails from new DJs who didn’t know they could download their shows/don’t know how.

Tallulah/Production:

Jake/PR:

  • Can board members post to Instagram during their board hours?
  • Bobbito Garcia: Wesleyan alum who came up in early NY rap scene — could we bring him on for an 80th anniversary show talk (with another artist?)
  • Buttonwood Tree Concert opportunity: someone reached out to partner an event in April for a folk band named Tempest

Dillon/Events:

Rachel/Public Affairs:

Helly/Ruth/MD:

Carina/Tech:

Will/Personnel:

  • Scheduled an info session for 2/21 (next Thursday),
    • Facebook event in the works for it

Ben/GM
– Print Program Guide will go to printer tomorrow (after PSD file of schedule is rec’d)
– 80th:

  • Freeform Feast: Tough thing to commit to w/r/t resources and profit, but certainly a good slot to have some sort of celebratory event
  • Soundcloud working with Charlotte to edit and publish WESU original recordings. For now, we are starting with interview shows.  We should invite staff, alumni, and listeners to contribute content! Looking for interviews and live performances. (should make release form available)
  • Meeting with “Los” of State House (NH Performance venue) about partnering for the 80th.
  • Put up a basic mention of 80th anniversary on wesufm.org front page
  • Need to chat w Carina about implementing Leiths historical pages.
  • Akua Naru / Bobbito Hop Hop event(s) this spring (lecture/performance) (potentially in NH? At Statehouse? On Campus?)
  • Other SP19  80th anniversary events – What else is this board going to make happen before year’s end?
  • Thoughts on 80th programming? Canned archive shows to fill in for excused absences?  Themes? Encourage staff to create programing that illustrates the significance of free form/college/community radio
    • How to bring current staff into celebrations? (particularly student contingent)
  • Living edge with Michael Arafet – Pete Ganbarg connection (hosted it one season (#2)) Michael Arafet is committed to producing 9 episodes in the fall. Perhaps, I C can commit to

Station updates:
Adobe issues –  Licensing for adobe creative cloud has expired on studio computers. New installations have to be on university managed computers. Right now, none of our computers fit that bill. I have received 2 replacement pcs with adobe and microsoft programs that will go into studio B and C. I’ve got orders in for 4-6 more PCs like this for the boardroom ar studio.

Transmitter

  • Meeting with ITS this week to get internet feed in the transmitter site. This will enable us to connect to our transmitter for alerts, remote control, and troubleshooting.
    • This is also a step forward in our effort bypass the costly copper phone lines that connect our studios to the transmitter. After the internet is setup, we will configure and install BArix streaming devices (being configured by WSHU engineers) to deliver sound with a redundant backup. Once we can bypass the copper wires, ITS will contribute $3,000 towards our transmitter balance. This is a one time payment for weaning ourselves off the expensive phone lines (being paid for by ITS).
