Good Evening, It’s Wednesday July 28th and this is the Jive at Five, our Daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU – Middletown, your station for NPR Pacifica, independent, and local public affairs by day and the best in Free form community programming week nights and weekends. Tonight at 6:30, The Music at the Mansion Concert Series: presents one of the great professionalconcert bands in the world U. S. Coast Guard Band, at the Wadsworth Mansion at Long Hill Estate in Middletown. This is an outdoor show where blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets are encouraged starting at 5:30. MARK NOMAD hosts an open Jam session tonight at Black-eyed Sally’s in Hartford. Friday night Mike Law and the Playboys play traditional blues, early R&B and 50’s rock at Blackeyed Sally’s. Saturday Laurie Morvan brings her blues style to the Sally’s stage. More online at www.blackeyedsallys.com

Down in New Haven at Toads place tonight there will be a CT Hip Hop Show Case featuring over ten CT Rap artists on their Main stage. Thursday night Toads presents a local Ska and Reggae showcase on the Main stage and STRETCH on the Lily pad stage. Friday night BIG ED, Somethin' Fierce, Fighting Confession, Nasty Disaster, and Nomad Take the Main stage and while AFTON PRESENTS… a Local Hip Hop showcase IN LILLY’S PAD. Down in New Haven at Cafe Nine tonight it’s CT indie/folk singer songwriter night, featuring: Chuck Costa , Nat Tuttle , & Christa Gniadek . Thursday night GO KAT GO! Presents: Los Straitjackets, Simon and the Bar Sinisters at café nine. Friday Night Manic Productions presents Arab On Radar, Brava Spectre, No Babies, and Orange Coax at Café nine. Saturday’s afternoon jazz jam at Café Nine will be hosted by George Baker this week. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 7pm, The Middletown Teen Theater performs Guys and Dolls at The Performing Arts Center at Middletown High School. They will also perform a Matinee on Sunday at 2pm. http://middletownteentheater.com

Thursday night at 7pm, Wesleyan’s Green Street Art Center Writers Out Loud: open mic with hosts Cocomo Rock and AlBower. Green street also offers a wide range of weekly dance, visual art, yoga and music lessons for young and old. More online at www.greenstreetartscenter.org

The Middletown /North End Farmers Market Takes place from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM On Friday’s through October, at It's Only Natural Market on Main Street. There is another Farmer’s market on Saturdays over the river in Portland’s Tri Town Grocery store parking lot as well.

Here in Middletown at the Buttonwood Tree Friday night, Nathan Knowles and Wendy Boardwell playing roots Americana music. Every Sunday afternoon at 1pm, Food not Bombs shares food in front of the buttonwood. All are welcome. This weekend also brings CT’s biggest summer music festival. This year Gathering of the Vibes returns to Bridgeport’s Seaside park, Kicking off Thursday and continuing through Sunday with overnight camping available. The line up is huge and fills multiple stages featuring dozens of national and international bands plus a local stage featuring the best homegrown music CT has to offer. At 6pm Free Speech Radio News from the Pacifica network brings you 30 minutes of news from around the world.

At 6:30 James fusion presents fusion Radio, a 90 minute live mix of techno and trance music. At 8pm Mike Nyce slows it down a few beats per minute on The Warehouse presenting 90 minutes of deep house music.

From 9:30pm-11pm it’s The Vault with DJ Anton Banks presenting listeners with the very latest in underground electronica music mixed live.

From 11pm-12:30am its Midnight Munchiez with DJ Gus Lo featuring Below Ground hip hop.

From 12:30 am -2am The Nonstop Hip Hop Spot with DJ Symphonic is a straightforward show, featuring hip hop from today and yesterday.

From 2am-4am our late night Summer Concert Series presents: Stevie Wonder recorded live at the Rainbow Theater in London on January 31, 1974.
The BBC World News Service kicks on at 4am. At 5am Morning edition, from NPR , starts our broadcast for tomorrow.
